5 HEALTHY RECIPES OF ASTRAGALUS

Astragalus root (Astragalus membranaceus) has been used for thousands of years in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) to promote wellness by strengthening the wei qi, the energy that circulates on the surface of the body.

Herbalists call this root an adaptogen because it helps to bring the body back into balance and to ward off effects of every-day physiological stressors.

The recipes of astragalus are numerous and ranges from astragalus tea, soups and many others.

Astragalus Recipes You Can Make at Home

If you’re curious as to how you can incorporate astragalus into your diet, here are some recipes you can try.

1). Astragalus Root Tea

When you feel a cold or the flu coming in, this astragalus tea recipe will help your immune system counter the viruses that are currently at work.

Ingredients

Procedure

Add the slices or powder to water and bring to a boil in a small saucepan. Let it boil for about 5 minutes.
Remove the slices from the water or strain the water.
Place the tea bag in a cup and pour the astragalus water into the cup.
Steep the tea bag for a couple of minutes.
Pour the astragalus tea in a thermal flask and sip it slowly throughout the day.

2). Astragalus Chicken Soup

Chicken soup has always been attributed to helping restore the body’s healthy state whenever you’re sick. By incorporating the astragalus herb into this recipe, you’re actually ensuring that your body has the means to help fight the cause of your symptoms.

Ingredients

  • 1 free-range organic chicken thigh
  • 4 slices of astragalus
  • 8 red dates
  • 1 tbsp. goji berries
  • 500 ml water

Procedure

Wash and clean the chicken thigh. Trim away excess fat and skin.
Parboil the chicken thigh.
Soak the Chinese herbs (astragalus, red dates and goji berries) for a short while.
Cut the red dates into halves and remove the seeds.
Place all the ingredients into the double-boiling jar.
Pour cold water into the jar, enough to cover the ingredients.
Place the jar into a deep pot and fill the pot with water until the jar is half submerged.
Bring the pot of water to a boil, lower the heat to a simmer and cook for about 1 hour.
Add salt to taste before serving.

3). Astragalus Bone Broth

Ingredients

  • Dried astragalus root
  • Raw apple cider vinegar
  • Chick bone or other bones
  • Water

Procedure

Place chicken or other bones in a pot or crockpot
Cover the bones with water
Add about 2 tablespoons of raw apple cider vinegar for every 8 cups of water
Add 1 ounce of dried astragalus root for every 8 cups of water or so
Cover with a tight fitting lid
Simmer very low on the stove or cook on low in the crockpot for 12-48 hours
Strain the broth and enjoy

I drink this broth as a hot beverage with a little bit of salt. The astragalus has a mild nearly smoky taste and the broth is quite delicious.

4). Astragalus Immune Boosting Soup

Ingredients

  • 4-5 slices of dried astragalus root
  • 1 to 4 inch strip of kombu seaweed
  • 5 shiitake mushrooms, fresh
  • 2-3 Tablespoons red miso paste
  • 4 Tablespoons of freshly chopped green onions
  • ½ bundle of kale, chard or any other dark leafy green
  • ¼ of one 14-oz package of firm tofu, chopped into squares

Procedure

Add 3 1/2 cups of water to your pot. Then add the sliced shiitakes, kombu (rinse and pat dry first) and astragalus.
Allow this mixture to simmer covered for 15-20 minutes. Then remove and compost the kombu and astragalus.
Add miso paste, chopped green onion, tofu, and chopped (or torn) dark leafy greens.
Stir and continue to cook until the miso is dissolved, then serve and enjoy.

5). Immune Broth

Ingredients

  • 3 cups water or broth
  • 1 ounce astragalus slices
  • l bulb fresh peeled garlic
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Procedure

Place water, garlic, and astragalus in pot. Bring to boil. Cover pot and simmer on medium low for several hours, until garlic is soft. Remove astragalus slices and any fibrous material. Drink hot.

You can eat the garlic with the broth, or remove the garlic and spread it on toast.

Try adding noodles, barley or rice, slivered almonds, and/or carrots (cook till soft) to the broth to make a meal.

Cook grains in leftover broth to add a healthier touch to a future meal.
Add fresh sliced ginger root or ground ginger and diced onion before cooking to add to the immune strengthening and antibacterial properties of the soup.

For an extra immune boost, add medicinal mushrooms like shiitake.
